«Julia and Alexander Ν. Diomedes Botanic Garden» is an institute of public benefit owing its existence and its name to an inspired dreamer, Alexander Diomedes.
The establisher of the institute was one of the most important personalities of the recent Greek history. Alexander Diomedes was born in Athens (1875 - 1950) where he also conducted his studies in law and political economy. He was acclaimed doctor of the University of Berlin (1898) and professor of the University of Athens (1905) at the age of 30. He was also a member of the Athens Academy.
He served his country at a crucial period of modern history. At the early stage of his career he was a collaborator of most Athenian newspapers and reporter of many European ones. He was elected member of the Hellenic Parliament in 1910 and served as Minister of Economics from 1912. In 1918 he was reassigned to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Next year (1919) he was appointed manager of the National Bank of Greece, where he was offering his services until 1949. This same year he became vice president in the coalition government by Th. Sofoulis whom he succeeded, as a prime minister, after his death. Alexander Diomedes passed away in November 1950 at the age of 75.
